5 ways Christians should respond to the gay agenda

57

“Will homosexuals go to hell?” a friend of mine asked me recently. I went silent. I knew that they knew that I am a professing Christian. Not just a church goer, but a born-again follower of Jesus Christ. I also knew that they knew that I am a speaker and published author of matters concerning responsible sexuality and the Christian faith. I also knew that they knew that I have a few friends who are gay. I was silent, neither because I feared my friend nor because I didn’t have an answer for her query, but rather, because I wanted to know the real question. I have been asked this question severally and I have watched several unhealthy debates between the LGBT community and the Church on the issue of same-sex unions spiral downwards such that more hatred, dissensions and chaos than solutions are birthed in the aftermath.

There are two cop-out reactions to such a weighty question for a Christian. And if you don’t think that the question is weighty, I dare say you’re either not familiar of the pluralistic culture we live in or you’re not cognizant of the scriptural responsibility of a Christian and their mouth. The first cop-out is to give a resounding “Didn’t you read the Sodom and Gomorrah Story?” in the name of truth. The second cop-out is to say, “I can’t judge” in the name of being loving. Those two reactions are cop-outs because they avoid the real issue and seek a quick-fix reaction that, unbeknownst to many Christians, injures the world. The former reaction creates aggravation from the LGBT community for the Christian’s obvious lack of sensitivity. The latter reaction creates a false sense of peace and makes the Christian seem sensitive and loving; but even the LGBT community (as atheists and many other non-Christians), know the Bible’s stand on the issue and regard this as a clear cop-out from a  Christian who is fearful and weak in their stand. It is regarded as complicity. Perhaps you’re a Christian reading this and saying, “Ernest, are you saying there’s a different answer to that question?” Yes, there is. I call it the bold humility response- a combination of solid un-watered-down truth and solid un-watered-down love.

My friend looked at me and pressed, ‘Well, you’re a Christian, right? Will homosexuals go to hell?”

“I’ll tell you this for sure,” I finally responded to her, “heterosexuality will not take you to heaven.”

I saw the disappointment in her face. She wanted a fight and I didn’t give it to her. I can’t say that the response is my own. I heard that brilliant response from Pastor Timothy Keller which was inspired by Jesus’ response on whether or not to pay taxes to Caesar. “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God,” Jesus said. The Pharisees did not get the fight they longed for. Jesus’ and Keller’s responses on a sensitive issue, each in his own time teaches me a few things that Christians can adopt in the 21st century with regards to the LGBT agenda.

Response 1: Focus on issues instead of non-issues

Had Jesus’ response been a direct, “Yes, don’t pay taxes,” it could mean his undue incarceration. Jesus realized that the people around him were trying to trap him. The Christian ought to ask God for wisdom to see if the question is a trap leading to an unnecessary debacle or if it holds an underlying more blatant issue. In Jesus’ case, he foresaw the useless debate and answered in God-given wisdom. That wisdom is available for every Christian who has the Holy Spirit in them. When my friend asked me “Will homosexuals go to hell?” the Holy Spirit impressed upon me that the real issue in her heart was “Why is the Christian God portrayed to be so vindictive and wrathful if he is a God of love?”  The response, “heterosexuality will not take you to heaven” begs the inevitable response from her (if not silence). The inevitable response is this: “Who then will go to heaven?” You see, Beloved, the question “Will homosexuals go to hell?” presupposes that entry into heaven is based on your sexuality. And if that presupposition in not true, then I’d challenge the author to ask as well: “Will liars go hell?”, “Will pornography viewers go hell?” or “Will heterosexual-adulterers go to hell?” When I avoid non-issues, it helps me address the main issue that every Christian should be focusing on: the gospel! The gospel says that EVERYONE is hell-bound. The gospel says it’s not your sin that sends you to hell but your rejection of a saviour from sin (all kinds of it). The gospel says the most moral heterosexual sitting in a pew without the Saviour is damned. The main issue of the gospel helps me then explain the problem of sin, God’s plan of salvation for every man through Jesus and the result of our response to that salvation- whether you’re heterosexual or homosexual and the transformation that comes with that salvation.

Response 2: Love them

Every Christian knows (or ought to know) that you are not saved by living a good life; you are saved by admitting that you can’t and allowing that humility to accept Jesus as a Saviour. He lived the life you couldn’t live and died the death you should have died. One principle that I have adopted in my own life is this, “don’t expect a non-Christian to act like a Christian.” Whilst every human being has a level of morality (that may coincidentally agree with the Christian’s), I have found it difficult to expect an unbeliever to share my gospel worldview. You cannot sit an exam you were not prepared for. The unbeliever does not have the Spirit that I have. They do not have the conviction that I have. The world will always act like the world and it shouldn’t surprise us. Well then, what’s left? To love them. Rick Warren once said, “Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.” Jesus said in Luke 6:32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.” (ESV)

Response 3: Stand by Scripture

Christians are fully aware of what the scriptures say about homosexuality. We know the accounts of Sodom and Gomorrah, the homosexuals that brought war upon the tribe of Benjamin, the commentary about being given over to sin from Saint Paul in Romans 1. One thing that Christian’s mustn’t do in the wake of the LGBT agenda is to pretend we do not know the truths of scripture. When Ireland overwhelmingly voted for a pro-gay constitution, Matthew Parris, a gay atheist in his blog the Spectator stated, “Even as a (gay) atheist, I wince to see the philosophical mess that religious conservatives are making of their case. Is there nobody of any intellectual stature left in our English church, or the Roman church, to frame the argument against Christianity’s slide into just going with the flow of social and cultural change?” The world isn’t bashful to ask what the Christian’s view is, but somehow we are ashamed to declare what the Bible says. It’s because we value being liked by the world. The follower of Jesus Christ must respond to the following dilemma in the 21st century: to value the approval of God or to value the approval of man? Charles Spudgeon once said that the church that the world likes is very likely the one that God abhors. True followers of Christ must unashamedly rebuke the USA Episcopal Church that now joins same-sex unions in matrimony because scripture is clear. At the same time we must rebuke Westboro for their infamous brutal and uncalled for pricks on gay people. We must stand by scripture if we are true followers of Jesus. However, the call to stand by our Biblical convictions isn’t purely from the standpoint that a random gay-atheist in Ireland wants to see some Church drama. Nay! The Christian has a biblical responsibility to speak up. 1 Peter 3:15 says “…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (ESV). We are told to speak up, but the caveat is gentleness and respect. Christians who are pressed to speak on the LGBT issue must always remember that truth without love is aggravation; it speaks but in a way that no one listens. James 1:20 says “…for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (ESV). On the other hand, love without truth is sentimentality; it affirms us but like carbon monoxide kills us silently in the name of sensitivity. However, truth dosed with love is rich! It won’t be easily accepted for its veracity, but it will be considered for its affection. Every Christian knows that the prophecies predict a global tribulation that is accompanied by death for those that stand with the faith of Jesus. In fact, we know very well that the growing LGBT movement is a partial fulfilment of the forthcoming scriptural prophecy that talks of a holocaust that may shame Hitler’s. The little LGBT squabbles are nothing in comparison to what’s coming. And if you know that to be true, then don’t avoid the issue. Fear God’s disapproval more than man’s disapproval. Stand by scripture with bold truth and extravagant love.

Response 4: Turn the other cheek

Father Jonathan Morris, a New York City clergy and Christian author, was walking down Broadway 22nd Street on June 29th 2015, just past midday when he ran into the gay marriage parade. Two men from the parade walked by and spat on him. “Oh well… I deserve worse,” he said on his Official Facebook page in response to the unkind act. I admired his reaction. He did not write an obscenely long post on equality and human rights. Instead he responded as Christ and turned the other cheek. At times, turning the cheek means silence. Wisdom cries, “Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” Proverbs 17:28 (ESV). It’s the same wisdom that Christ warns us when he says , “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37 (ESV). If no one told you, allow me to do so; it is okay not to have anything to say. At times you need to lose some battles in order to win the war. And the war that’s at stake isn’t a dislike for rainbow colours splashed on Facebook profile pictures; the war is a gospel message being ridiculed because of a bad example of the believer’s tongue.

Response 5: Fix our own problems

One reason, I believe, the church is finding it difficult to respond to the LGBT issue is because of the issue of hypocrisy and false doctrines. If we opposed sex before marriage among heterosexuals in the church with the same vehemence as we do the LGBT, then perhaps our hypocrisy wouldn’t override the gospel. Pornography, masturbation, sex before marriage among heterosexuals dissatisfies the same God who isn’t pleased with sex between the same genders. I struggled with porn and masturbation personally and I know how you can sit comfortably in a pew and not feel as bad as someone who struggles with something “worse”. It’s hypocrisy and the Lord rebuked me for it. And when it comes to doctrine, many of our in-house matters need fixing too. We are living in a deceptive Church age where:

  • Biblical teachings are substituted with entertainment.
  • The Gospel of Salvation and repentance is substituted with self-improvement sermons such as “7-steps to get your happiness back.”
  • Discipleship and spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and memorizing scripture are seen as something that pastors do and not necessary for the rest of the congregation.
  • Biblical stories are substituted with lifestyle enhancement messages and modern tales.
  • Promoting holiness, purity and obedience to the scriptures is termed as being legalistic.
  • Concern for the physical body outweighs concern for the soul
  • Our children are discipled by Sunday school teachers instead of their fathers.
  • Raising children is an interference to making money.

But it’s not a shock either. Paul the Apostle warned us about this. “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” 2nd Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV).

So, as we oppose the LGBT, let us also ask ourselves, what are we inviting them to? Sow-a-seed-and-God-will-bless-you doctrines? God-wants-you-to-be-happy sermons? Are we simply transferring them from one boiling cauldron to another? The basic core truths of the faith must be revitalized and you may be surprised to see God win over some in the LGBT movement by the light of the gospel. Perhaps because of this light, the next time my friend asks me, “Will homosexuals go to hell?” I will have the confidence to give them a better response. I will not delay but say, “They don’t have to because Christ went to hell for them already.” What they do with that salvation that Christ offers is up to them, not me, because the conviction of the Holy Spirit is not a man’s job. And if the gospel stands, the true doctrine of salvation will help save bits of our already crumbling world.

  1. Truly helpful blog…But I have a question that I need to ask can a man fall in love with another man.See in the Word homosexuality is a sin…but is it condenming the sexual act only? Can people of the same sex fall in love like a man and a woman without having sexual acts?

    • That's a very good question. I believe, the act is a subsequent action. Jesus condemned "Looking at a woman with lust". Scripture teaches us that sin begins at the desire stage and should be nabbed then. 1 Peter 2:11 says to watch out for sinful desires that wage war against our soul. Not the acts per se, but the root.

  2. You know I was just from reading this, shook my head in silent agreement, closed the tab then first thing I see on CNN from my newsfeed brought me back. The King is indeed coming. May true believers stand and not conform to the patterns of this world. All kinds of sins will truly not enter the kingdom of God. The times are indeed full of deceit. Defending sin in public is suddenly standing up for humanity and being applauded, pointing others to Jesus Christ in public on the contrary is all sorts of wrong. Speaks volumes of where the times are headed. It is difficult to draw others to Christ with grey areas in our lives. Question to every believer and I is, are you ready? Let us keep watch like the 5 wise virgins. God bless your writing for His glory Ernest.

  4. Indeed. Many prophecies being fulfilled in our days, which is an indication of God moving right here in the earth yet we are more cognisant of the devil's actions.Every action of the world is just engineered and designed to give the platform for the church to arise and shine as deep darkness covers the earth and to become chief among mountains for nations to stream to it and ask of His ways.

  5. May the LORD continue to use you Earnest for His Glory! I have seen reactions that broke my heart, this LGBT issue left me confused, and, mum, i am enlightened!!

  8. Interesting Read. My dilemma is those in the middle – brothers and sisters in Christ who struggle with same sex attraction (SSA) BUT don't engage in the ACT (MSM or WSW) itself. You see the Church on one side is not without Voice in condemning the ACT. The world on the other, urges people with SSA to "come-out" in the skewed name of; Love is what matters. Where are these Saints to go? Who will speak to the generation caught between the two worlds – of Condemnation vs Acceptance, who because of the myriad of issues that's at the root of homosexuality, find sin in them expressed through SSA? If a Pastor is to confess to having SSA would the Church accept his Ministry to Men or would every appointment be frowned upon and questioned? What if it's a lady with unhealthy desire for other ladies – say a Sunday school teacher, seen spending time with younger gals in discipleship? Is the Church ready to accept these middle folks in their ranks or should they look for a fellowship where they find love and acceptance so as to Minister for Christ? Forums where they are given skills to live for Christ in the midst of their broken sexuality so they can find fulfillment in other areas of their lives beside their sexuality where the deceitfulness of sin has enticed as their Sole Source of Fulfillment? I agree the Church Hypocrisy needs to be called out so as to move forward in truth as laid in Scripture

    • I love these thoughts. They are really challenging my thinking. It's one tough nut to crack but one thing that I think believers ought to do is open up our homes to have men and women discuss such delicate confessions. In those homes, grace and mercy coupled by vulnerability will bring that kind of community that will answer some of those hard questions. I listened to a testimony of a lesbian who said that a certain Christian man just opened up his home for tea to everyone in her neigbourhood. What ensued was a fellowship of love where people struggling with their sexuality came forth and learnt profound things from him. They were bold enough to query because he let them know that the Bible will not get hurt if you throw hard questions at it. Another thing that he did is that he did not treat unbelievers as projects. He befriended them genuinely (as Jesus did). I'm learning that we can’t manufacture conviction. The Holy Spirit either shows up or he doesn’t. But if you befriend people, soon they learn that the greatest sin in the world is not homosexuality but unbelief.

    • I once read an article in Christianity Today about a Seminary student who struggled all his life with SSA.He tried to pray, read the Bible and even go for discipleship but his situation remained the same. He eventually decided to remain celibate for life in order to not commit the act itself.

    • I have a formerly gay friend who stayed celibate and did not engage in any homosexual acts for over 17 years of his life. He said it was a good idea for him. It helped him understand everything. I think one thing that held him back was the repercussions of gay sex- destroyed rectum muscles and serious health impediments in the excretal area from those who actively participated in anal intercourse.

  9. How do you address a situation whereby a male is born with female organs and has a strong inclination to act like a female although he is a man or a female has very high levels of testosterone and acts manly not because she desires but her body contains the hormone.. What is the solution to a dilemma like this? Besides Prayer, will a physical change e.g. surgery be required because as much as you take care of the spiritual, the physical cannot be ignored?

    • This is a very good question.Yes, physical intervention is necessary in some of those cases. However, surgical sex has it's boundaries. Surgical sex is based basically on examining the chemical composition of the subject. I know someone who answers this question better than I can. His name is Dr. Paul McHugh. He is a skilled surgeon who has read and practised surgical sex. Read his article here. http://www.firstthings.com/article/2004/11/surgical-sex

    • Thanks for this article. Interesting how it highlights the fact that God knows best when He gives you a particular body. MAY WE ALL DESIRE TO FIT INTO HIS PLAN and not not coin our own path as we go along.

  10. This is very timely Ernest. I also often wonder about this matter. It breaks my heart the times we live in today…so much seems to be going wrong. But I love the fact that you encourage us to focus on the real issues and not the non issues. I think the response you gave the young lady was on point. and i believe as the church we really need to focus on fixing our own problems.

I am actually challenged to fix my own life…it is easy as a Christian to look at the world and see all the sin and look at the SPEC in my brother's eye while ignoring the PLANK in my own eye. I looked at this scripture recently in Matthew and it challenged me. I am still a work in progress, broken, sinful and disobedient that I am realizing the Planks I have and seeking God to fix me.

thank you for being a blessing. #Godspeed

  11. Great and sober write there Ernest. I love its balance.
This is real spiritual battle for an insecure Christian community already messed from within.

Bro. what about the institutionalization this particular sin unlike other sins like masturbation, stealing, etc. as it happened in USA?
How should the Christian or the Church respond to that?

    • When institutionalization takes place, we ought to avoid reactions and start thinking. If such laws are passed, it means the people at the top are not God-fearing. Where are the believers in politics? God called people like Daniel and Esther to occupy top political positions so that some laws of the lands could be adjusted in favour of God's people.

The Bible says in PROVERBS 29:2 "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan."

An institutionalization bespeaks of a lack of the righteous in authority. And if they are there, they need our spiritual support because the way isn't constitutional; it is spiritual. Esther had Mordecai's backing. We need to be the Mordecais for the Esthers that God has raised in such positions of influence.

However, far from that, despite our best efforts, the LORD may allow some of these moves to pass and it shouldn't worry us because He is sovereign. I look at the world and I get worried at times, but then I remember, "Wait, this is how the script is meant to play out. This is scripture in fulfillment." That view however does not alienate me from my responsibility.

Lastly, we are dealing with this problem from the tail end. By the time a courts institutionalizes this, the war was lost a long time ago. Where was it lots? In the home/ the family unit. Government is made up of individuals who come from families. If we sort out families at the grassroots level, we sort out every place that members of those families go. If children are discipled and taught the right way, then the foundation of society is secured. David warns us in Psalm 11:3 "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (KJV)

  12. One of the major issues of this last day in as far as homosexuality is concerned is how we teach our children to view their bodies. We are spirit beings inhabiting earthen vessels. The combination of body, spirit and soul make a man who is made in the image and likeness of a mighty God (Gen 1:26). I therefore disagree with the Sprite advert that declared image is nothing. This verse tells me that image is everything! It went further to tell us to OBEY YOUR THIRST! How wrong they were. The instance we begin to obey the thirsts of this mortal realm we lose sight of why we were created and for Whom (Col 1:16). It becomes about us and satisfying every lust that proceeds from our wicked minds and hearts (Jer 17:9). With the understanding that we all have sinned and fall short of His glory, we need to lovingly awaken each other into sanity.

  13. Good morning brother. It’s encouraging to see how hard you continue to pursue God in our generation. Do not tire. Press on. I read your blog today and feel somehow equipped to deal with any questions on this issue that my tender aged children might have.
I am a scientist by profession and I must say that human beings need to be careful about what they choose to believe based on the dictates of science since it’s the one place where empirical evidence of something totally validates its manifestation and even goes further ahead and justifies it. The gospel is heavily themed by FAITH, the substance of things unseen, unobservable to the physical eye, untouchable by the physical hands yet VERY REAL (Heb 11:1). Like love, truth and salvation. Like God Himself and all that is in Him. Perhaps we should be grateful to our all knowing God who hid these precious things in an immortal place, far from the corrupting reach of men yet accessible to all who truly desire life in abundance. I will comment on SSA as a parent and as a geneticist. But above all as a believer and lover of God, Jehovah my Father.

  14. We do not own ourselves. We are owned by God and we are His creation. Even when viewing sexuality we need to refer to His Spirit to understand our functionality. Just as we take in food through the mouth so do we take in air through our wind pipe. It is medically possible to have food pumped into the stomach through other means other than the mouth but anyone who has ever needed to be fed in such a manner will tell you that it was not fun. Even as humans, the things we create have particular functionality. If you use a blow drier as air conditioning, you will be dishonouring the manufacturers of both the blow driers and air conditioners. If you use your body for any other purpose other than for what is defined in the maker's manual then you are setting yourself up for some serious malfunction. Masturbation, homosexuality, sex before marriage, rape, pornography and all other sexually deviant behaviours contribute to creating havoc.

  15. I am no stranger to sexual sin and like Ernest I have completely submitted my life to God and found life in the process. My encouragement to those who are struggling is this, God is real and if you ask Him and also make several changes in your lifestyle priorities (Accept Christ as your Lord and savior, choose your company, what you watch and read), you will overcome and arise victorious by the power of the Holy Spirit. To all those who have never meddled in the mud of sexual deviance, be encouraged to know that there are many like you. Don’t feel the need to dirty yourself so that you can fit in. You are part of the honours’ roll with Christ at the top of that list. He was a virgin too remember!

  16. I bumped into an old friend the other day and he shared with me how serving God in their day of youthfulness was much easier because there were few distractions. The media was not so empowered then and so sexual imagery was hard to come by. You had to go looking for it to find it. Today it’s the opposite for us and our children. Everything with a voice shouts torrents of sex, lies and the ugliness of mortality. Yet I love Thuo's perspective (in the comments above). A perspective declared by Isaiah in chapter 60. I must also believe that God has a plan for me and my children in this day of increasing darkness because through prophet Jeremiah, He said He does (Jer 29:11).
SSA is one of those things birthed by human curiosity and validated by science. Of course if I convinced myself that I have sensual awareness of another person (or animal or even inanimate object!) and a scientist was close enough to measure my brain waves and chemistry, he will detect changes in my biochemistry and what not. Science has been used to validate rage that results in murders and rapes and even criminals have been acquitted because of the so called expert witness. Even the closeness we feel to pets like dogs can be measured to some degree.

  17. Our creator did not make robots; we are living beings with capacity to make choices. God’s Spirit is in us. Just as I believe that God responds to my prayers so too do I believe that my emotions and chemical composition have no power over me. I am body, soul and spirit. Only my spirit has the capacity to interact with the Spirit of God and hence cause changes in the physical environment. This is what Jesus taught me in the first miracle at Cana of Galilee. He turned water into wine! The physical is what the spiritual wants it to be. Didn’t God create the world by the power of His Word in the presence of His Spirit? God said….and it became flesh. Outside of the governs of the Holy Spirit we will find ourselves at the mercy of flesh and men.

  18. A male is a human who carries seed (It’s not about size or shape. If it works then thank God and focus on worshiping Him. He gave you all you need and all that “one woman meant for you” will need. If you obsess about what the world calls a "male" you will get frustrated. Focus on God and you will find strength in who He says you are. You become what His Spirit defines). A female is a human who incubates seed (Hormones are weird things but double portion or half portion issues shouldn't matter. A woman is an environment that sprouts life when submitted to a Godly government. Seek the purposes of God and His design for you and you will be free truly from issues of weight, size, length, width, colour etc. If you are internally governed you will avoid excesses and flourish in health, you and your household). Both male and female are a species called man created in the image of God. And our creators plan was and still is for a man and a woman in covenant relationship to come together and bring forth the future generations in an environment that facilitates the presence of God. If two males come together, they both carry seed and will have to outsource incubation (crude but true). Put two bean seeds next to each other nothing happens. Put a bean seed in watered ground and you create life for the next generations. Homosexuality is an end to itself. Like a looping computer program with no exit plan. It ends when the system collapses! A woman and a woman come together and you have, well…… nothing. You have nothing. There is divine order to things even the sun and the moon obey and stick to His plan of one to rule the day, the other to rule the night.

  19. SSA and all other things that enable disobedience will one day be put to the test of an eternal God. And I agree with Ernest, only love, truth, kindness (precious fruits of the Holy Spirit) will remain. Only what God says will remain (Matt 24:35). Sorry for the long response though… As a mother, I feel strongly about this issue. May God give light. AMEN
